Montclair New Jersey, located 12 miles west of the Lincoln Tunnel, is a unique suburban town with a distinctive urban feeling. Tree-lined streets and architecturally interesting houses characterize this pedestrian-friendly town of almost 40,000. Although only 6 square miles, Montclair has cultural, dining, entertainment and recreational opportunities all within its boundaries.
Whether you want to eat in one of the many ethnic restaurants, go to a concert at the refurbished Wellmont Theatre, sip coffee at one of the many coffee houses or go to the theatre, nightlife in Montclair has endless possibilities. For the sports-minded, there are numerous parks for walking, hiking and nature watching, 2 indoor skating rinks (and outdoor pond skating when weather permits), 3 town pools and a variety of town-run recreational programs. Yogi Berra Stadium, home to a minor league baseball team, is located right on the Montclair State University campus. Montclair is also home to an art museum, a historical museum and several art galleries.
Montclair public schools are unique. Since the 1970's, this district has operated under the magnet school concept; parents are offered school choice. For instance, Edgemont is the only public Montessori elementary school in the state; Rand school is the Family and Environmental Magnet. 90% of the high school graduates enrolled in college and 13 attended Ivy League Schools. 64 were named Advance Placement scholars by the College Boards.
Easy access to New York City is a big draw for Montclair residents. Many commuters can walk to one of the 6 train stations; trains go either to Hoboken or direct to Penn Station in Manhattan. DeCamp also provides two bus lines that makes frequent stops to pick up passengers. A township jitney service is available in the evening from the Bay Street station, for South End residents.
